Among Hammond’s many assets is a well-developed transportation system that connects our region to other parts of the nation and world. Transcontinental railroads, extensive nationwide trucking capacity, major highways, a fully operational airport, and nearby Port Manchac contribute to Hammond’s multimodal transportation system.

Highways

Hammond sits at the intersection of I-55 and I-12. I-55 connects the South to northern cities and services, including Memphis, Chicago, and the Great Lakes. Meanwhile, I-12, a 90-mile stretch, bypasses New Orleans traffic and serves as a direct alternative route for travel to I-10, a transcontinental highway connecting East and West Coasts.

Railways

The Canadian National Railroad (CN) bisects Hammond and provides both freight and Amtrak-passenger services to points throughout the continental U.S. The Canadian National/Illinois Central mainline serves Hammond, and a dedicated rail line connects Hammond Industrial Park to the mainline railroad, making our railways an easily accessible resource for businesses.

Port

Port Manchac is cradled by both the CN mainline and I-55 (with direct links to Interstates 10, 12 and 59), making it a pivotal transportation hub. It is conveniently located outside of the congested Port of New Orleans and Port of Baton Route cargo markets and offers prime inland location to store and trans-load bulk, break-bulk, neo-bulk, and containerized cargoes by barge, rail or truck.

Airport

Hammond Northshore Regional Airport is the largest general aviation airport on the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain and can handle and accommodate all types of aircraft. It features dual-lighted runways measuring 6500’ x 100’ and 5001’ x 150’ (the longest runways between Bay St. Louis, MS and Baton Rouge, LA); two Fixed-Base Operators, and a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower. The airfield is more than 900 acres and is open to general, corporate, and military aircraft.
